The Calycanthus Floridus is a dense, rounded
deciduous shrub with a suckering habit which grows 6 to 9 feet tall with
a slightly greater spread of 6 to 12 feet.
Because of its fragrant blooms which have
been described as combining hints of pineapple, strawberry and banana,
it is commonly know by several names:

However, the common name "spicebush" more
often refers to shrubs of the Lindera genus (in another family of the Laurales),
especially Lindera benzoin. In addition, another common name is "hairy
allspice" which is in reference to the hairy twigs and leaf undersides
of this plant.
The Carolina Sweetshrub or Carolina Allspice
features very fragrant, brown to reddish-brown flowers (about 2 inches
across) which bloom at the ends of short branchlets in May. The flowers
give way to brownish, urn-shaped fruits (seed capsules) which mature in
fall and persist throughout the winter. Lustrous, dark green (pale beneath),
ovate to elliptic leaves to 6 inches long turn golden yellow in fall. Leaves
are aromatic when bruised.
The upright, oval shape and attractive
foliage makes the Calycanthus Floridus an excellent candidate for the back
of a shrub border or for use as a screen. It can be sheared or thinned,
depending on the desired use. Pruning and training the plant to several,
upright stems can create an attractive specimen plant. The plant grows
in sun or shade but is taller in shade. It transplants easily and prefers
a moist soil.
