Magnolia Liliiflora 'Jane' is a member
of the "Little Girl" group of hybrid magnolias that was developed in the
1950s at the U.S. National Arboretum.
It is a hardy shrub or small tree with
impressive reddish purple flowers outside, white inside opening late in
spring to avoid frost damage. Flowers are a gorgeous tulip-shape with a
lightly scented fragrance. Leaves are dark green and somewhat leathery
in appearance.
The Jane Magnolia grows 10 to 15 feet high.
Grows best in full morning sun and partially shaded afternoons. Prefers
rich, moist, and well drained soils.
Magnolia is an ancient genus. Having evolved
before bees appeared, the flowers developed to encourage pollination by
beetles. As a result, the carpels of Magnolia flowers are tough, to avoid
damage by eating and crawling beetles.
