The Cladrastis Kentukea is commonly known
as the American Yellowwood or Kentucky Yellowwood.
It is a species of Cladrastis native to
the southeastern United States, with a restricted range from western North
Carolina west to eastern Oklahoma, and from southern Missouri and Indiana
south to central Alabama. Also sometimes called Virgilia.
The American Yellowwood is a medium-sized
flowering tree. The fragrant 1 to 1.5 inch white flowers found on 8 to
14 inch pendulous panicles are a delight in May. The leaves are alternate,
odd-pinnately compound.
The bright yellow beacon of the yellowwood
in the gray fall-winter scene found in most woodlands and gardens is a
wonderful sight, especially when back- or side-lighted.The infrequently
found Kentucky native woody tree is tolerant of a wide variety of Kentucky
environs. More common to the acid soils of eastern Kentucky it can also
be found on the alkaline soils of southernedge of the coalfield area.
One of the rarest trees of eastern North
America. Found principally on the limestone cliffs of Kentucky, Tennessee
and North Carolina, but it is hardy at the north. It is widely grown as
an ornamental tree for its attractive flowers, and is locally naturalized
in many areas of the eastern United States outside of its restricted native
range.
The American Yellowwood is recommended
as really one of the best medium sized trees for cultivation. The only
objections that is mentioned is a tendency of the trunk to divide very
near the ground.
The name yellowwood derives from its yellow
heartwood, used in small amounts for specialist furniture, gunstocks and
decorative woodturning.
