Foliage of the Crataegus Crus-Galli (aka Cockspur Hawthorn or Thornless Cockspur Hawthorn
The Crataegus Crus-Galli (sometimes spelled Crusgalli) is commonly known as Cockspur Hawthorn or Thornless Cockspur Hawthorn.

The Thornless Cockspur Hawthorn has a mature height of 15 to 20 feet and a mature spread of 15 to 20 feet.  It features white flowers and red fruit.  Its fall color is red-orange.

The Thornless Cockspur Hawthorn is a beautiful small tree with a rounded spreading form. Its glossy dark green summer leaves turn bronze red to purplish red in fall.

Small white flowers bloom in May. Few birds like the small red berries so they stay on into late fall. It prefers well-drained soil but will tolerate many soils. It is pH adaptable and pollution tolerant. It is listed as a low water-use tree, once established.

The wood of some hawthorn species is very hard and resistant to rot. In rural North America it was prized for use as tool handles and fence posts.
