The Gleditsia Triacanthos Inermis Skyline
is commonly known as the Skyline Honeylocust or Skyline Honey Locust.
It is one of the thornless forms (f. inermis) of the gleditsia triacanthos
species.
The Skyline Honeylocust is a deciduous
tree native to eastern North America. It is mostly found in the moist soil
of river valleys ranging from southeastern South Dakota to New Orleans
and central Texas, and as far east as central Pennsylvania.
The Skyline Honeylocust is thornless and
podless, develops a strong central leader and has a broad pyramidal form
with ascending branches. The open spreading crown and small leaves result
in a filtered shade in the summer that easily lets grass grow under it.
Its dark green leaves turn bright golden yellow in the fall.
It is a relatively fast growing tree when
young and is relatively tolerant of high pH soils and drought. It is also
among the most cold-hardy honeylocust cultivars.
The Gleditsia Triacanthos Inermis Skyline
can reach a height of 66 to 100 feet, with fast growth, and are relatively
short-lived; about 120 years. They are also prone to losing large branches
in windstorms. The leaves are pinnately compound on older trees but bipinnately
compound on vigorous young trees. The leaflets are 1/2 to 1 inch (smaller
on bipinnate leaves) and bright green. They turn yellow in the fall. The
strongly scented cream-colored flowers appear in late spring, in clusters
emerging from the base of the leaf axils.
The fruit of the Skyline Honeylocust is
a flat legume (pod) that matures between September and October. The pods
are generally between 6 to 8 inches. The pulp on the insides of the pods
is edible and sweet, unlike the Black locust, which is toxic. The seeds
are dispersed by grazing herbivores such as cattle and horses, which eat
the pod pulp and excrete the seeds in droppings; the animal's digestive
system assists in breaking down the hard seed coat, making germination
easier.
