The Ostrya Virginiana is commonly known
as the Hophornbeam or Ironwood Tree as well as by the names American Hophornbeam,
Eastern Hophornbeam, Hardhack and Leverwood.
The Ostrya Virginiana is native to eastern
North America, from Nova Scotia west to southern Manitoba and eastern Wyoming,
southeast to northern Florida and southwest to eastern Texas.
The Hophornbeam is a deciduous understory
tree growing to 60 feet tall and with a 8 to 20 inch trunk diameter. The
bark is brown to gray-brown, with small shaggy plates flaking off.
The leaves are ovoid acute, 2 to 5 inches
long and 1.5 to 2.5 inches broad, with a finely serrated margin.
The flowers are catkins produced in spring
at the same time as the new leaves appear; the male catkins are 3/4ths
to 2 inches long, the female 1/3rd to 3/5ths inches long. The fruit is
a small nutlet fully enclosed in a papery white involucre with 10-30
involucres on each catkin.
The buds and catkins are important source
of winter food for some birds, notably Ruffed Grouse.
It is grown as an ornamental plant and
is sometimes used as a street tree.
