The Quercus Robur is commonly known as
the English Oak or Pedunculate Oak. It is native to most of Europe
as well as parts of Asia Minor and also parts of North Africa.
The English Oak can live for hundreds of
years and have always been important for their timber. The wood has been
used to build ships, houses and furniture, but is also renowned for its
use in casks for maturing wines and spirits.
A specimen of notable longevity is one
in Lithuania which is believed to be approximately 1,500 years old; another
specimen, called the Kongeegen (Kings Oak), estimated to be about 1,200
years old, grows in Denmark. Yet another can be found in Sweden and is
over 1,000 years old.
The English Oak is distinguished from this
species by its leaves having only a very short stalk, less than 1/3rd of
an inch long, and by its pendunculate acorns. The acorn appears usually
in September and is very popular with squirrels and form a valuable food
resource for several small mammals and some birds, notably Eurasian Jays
Garrulus glandarius.
