Foliage of the Syringa Reticulata (Japanese Tree Lilac
The Syringa Reticulata is commonly known as the Japanese Tree Lilac.  It is native to eastern Asia, northern Japan, northern China, Korea, and far southeastern Russia.

Japanese Tree Lilac is an excellent oval shaped small deciduous tree growing to a height of 40 feet (rarely to 50 feet), with a trunk up to 12 inches (rarely 16 inches) diameter; it is the largest species of lilac, and the only one that regularly makes a small tree rather than a shrub.

It produces large 5 to 6 inch clusters of small, fragrant, creamy-white flowers in late June to early July when few other trees are blooming. Plant crown is quite dense especially in young trees. Fruit is a capsule that turns from light green to brown as it matures. Bark is quite dark with noticeable white lenticels, resembling bark of cherry trees.

The 'Ivory Silk Japanese Tree Lilac' cultivar is a dense headed oval plant form. Branches are ascending which allows it to be successfully used in smaller spaces. This selection forms a pleasant, rounded tree to 25 feet tall with stocky branch structure. It is very common in commerce and blooms heavily, even as a young plant. Pests do not bother the healthy, deep green leaves and the cherry-type bark is attractive all year.
